Matthew Findlay

Councillor Candidate

I moved to the NSW South Coast with my family in 1992, when I was just three-years old. Starting my education at Sunshine Bay Primary School, then to Batemans Bay High School and finally Moruya TAFE, completing a course in construction and Building. I am proudly public schooled in the local area.

In between high school and TAFE, I Studied Primary Education in Ballarat, after realising teaching wasn’t for me I left Australia to travel the world for an extended ‘gap year’; a path well travelled by many of my generation. I was a tour guide in Europe, worked in hospitality around the UK, and travelled around to know as much as the world (and myself!) as I could.

Finally settling back down in Batemans Bay in 2014, I took on an apprenticeship with the family business, Findlay Constructions, and am now a fully qualified builder. At the last state election, I changed my relationship with the political system as I realised how much the government affects the way we live, and how little some politicians cared. Then I saw the response that the Local, State and Federal Government took when my family home burnt down during the New Years Eve fires in 2020. I’m sick of inaction. It’s time for more action to create a better south coast.

The Eurobodalla Shire I want to live in takes pride in itself. I wish to support a council that puts its people first and welcomes visitors from outside to keep our economy growing. I want a council that is progressive, in touch with its residents and has a sustainable plan for the future. A council that respects the land we live on, like it was respected thousands of years ago. I aim to help build a council that hears the concerns of our next generations, while bringing those with a wealth of local knowledge and experience along with us. Most of all, the Eurobodalla Shire I want to live in and lead is empathetic and hopeful for our future.

I believe I represent a broad population of our beautiful region that haven’t felt like they’ve been heard. We are the people of the area. And I’m ready to represent us.
