Jack Egan

Councillor Candidate

I am a climate activist and bushfire survivor, now focused on rebuilding our Rosedale home with my partner, Cath. We have lived full-time in Eurobodalla since 2017 and part-time since 2006.

I am acutely aware that we in Eurobodalla are lucky to have a beautiful backdrop of forest and sea to our lives. We must treasure that.

Thriving here economically and socially depends on us maintaining and nurturing a healthy natural environment which in turn depends on implementing local solutions to climate change.

I work with a number of grassroots groups in Eurobodalla and across the region: 350 Eurobodalla, Bushfire Survivors for Climate Action, and CANsigns (Climate Action Now Signs). I also co-convene the project ZeroSE – A Beyond Zero Future for South East NSW currently being undertaken by an alliance of community groups across Eurobodalla region.

Having recently retired, I look back fondly on my times as a shearer, statistician and data manager, secondary teacher in maths and religion, and as an aged care worker.

My two daughters are now making their own way in life and I stand for providing equal opportunity for everybody. Everybody should be able to add what value they can and get a fair share of the collective fruits. I am particularly concerned that we create more career opportunities for young people on the South Coast, as well as more social housing.

My union experience as a rouseabout in woolsheds stirred my commitment to the virtues of collective bargaining and protection. I joined the ALP Moruya Sub-branch in Spring 2019 to use my time to promote fairness and I’ve volunteered throughout my life including some years as a RFS brigade secretary.

I am standing with the Labor team to ensure that Council is honest, open and transparent. Decision-makers must be in touch with their communities, consult and listen upfront. Then they need to say why they decided the way they did so they can be held to account for process and outcomes.

I look forward to engaging with the community in this 2021 Shire election.
